selah
In the busy world of ours, how often do we take the time to actually pause: physically, mentally PAUSE. In the Book of Psalms selah is a word often used to indicate a pause, reflection, or musical interlude in psalms. When I reflect on selah, I recall the movie Click starring Adam Sandler, where he uses a remote to pause his life when it becomes too stressful or undesirable. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a remote to pause our lives sometimes? When it becomes overwhelming, when things get hard, or when you don’t want to hear what someone is saying? … Sounds good, but without those moments, we would miss out on the opportunity to learn how to rest in God’s presence. To do so, we must selah or pause.
Psalm 23 is a great reminder on how to do so:
The first verse: ” The Lord is my Shepherd” gives us the guidance to flock to Him, the Shepherd
It also reminds us not to want what our flesh wants, but what the Spirit wants. ” I shall not want”
The second verse: “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters” keeps us hopeful because we know we are safe and protected with the Lord, who is our refuge:
When we take those moments to “selah” in our lives, we create space for Him who has the power above everything and everyone to lead us in rest. He leads us back to “what is true, and what is peaceful, and of a good report”. He is our selah. Find a time to pause with intentionality today, so that the Spirit may guide you in your words, responses, and thoughts.
